What the Frock? - Trends that are currently confusing me

Modern fashion is a revolving door of trends that spark other trends that lead to still other trends. I love watching the parade as the 70s thing turns into the 90s thing turns into whatever comes down the pipeline next, and jumping on the bandwagon when, for example 1950s style skirts come back around. But sometimes the things that the it crowd deems stylish can only make me laugh and shake my head.

1. Wearing a puffer coat halfway off your shoulders.

Fashion is for people who don't have to use their arms, apparently.

I understood draping them over your shoulders, but buttoning them up and then forcing them off the shoulder? Porcelina actually mentioned this in her guest post back in September, and it's a real thing. A real stupid thing.

2. Dresses over jeans.

And let's not even talk about the striped turtleneck and socks.

"Jeans and a t shirt are so boring. I know - I'll throw a fancy slip dress over the top! Because that totally makes sense!"

I think there are ways that a dress over pants could work and look good - I'm mostly thinking of a hostess gown, which is basically a dress with a split front skirt worn over tailored pants, which is chic AF - but wearing a forever21 ruffled floral dress over a pair of baggy jeans is not a good if you're over the age of 8.

3. Mules.

This whole outfit is an eyesore, but gaze, for a moment, at these furry open backed loafers. Yikes.

I have a sincere and undying hatred of open backed shoes, which I am always convinced will either rub my feet raw or get left behind if I walk too fast. I kind of like the look of 1950s mules (although I'd never wear them for the aforementioned reasons), but the current ones are almost defiantly ugly.

4. Sock boots.

Edina Monsoon, is that you?

I actually quite like this particular outfit and generally like Caroline Issa's style, but mentally replace those boots with a similar pair of heels. Way better, right?

Because the one thing every woman wants is to make her legs look shorter, right? And if you have really muscular calves, like me, it comes with the added bonus to cankles.

5. Stirrup pants.

Why? Just... why?

Why? Just... why?

I feel like current fashion is basically just raiding the worst trends of my childhood and calling them cool again. Hilariously, "street style stars" are wearing them over their shoes. Not kidding.

As a blogger I try not to traffic too much in snark, but sometimes you just have to shake your head and go, "why?" So no disrespect is intended to the women featured here, just a bit of light ribbing at things that I'm pretty sure they'll laugh at some day themselves.

What's a current trend that you find yourself puzzled by?
