Novus Dies

This summer has been going by so fast! I started out a couple of months ago with the intention to keep going, to be creative with the wardrobe that I already had instead of buying new things, to explore my new area and find cool places to shoot… and then between hangovers and weddings and workouts and work life, photography and blogging just kind of fell by the wayside.

So, with that said, let’s talk about this dress. This Dress. I bought it back in April or early May, and aside from one fun night out it’s just been hanging in my closet, begging to be worn. The woman at the shop where I purchased it described it as a “maybe-Shaheen” - it’s got all the hallmarks, but not the trademark, which she thinks might have been on the belt that the dress no longer has. Whatever its provenance, I am absolutely in love with it. The single shoulder, the gold detailing, the boned bodice, the full-but-not-circle-skirt - all of it comes together to make a piece that’s both easy to wear and really special. The single shoulder is even on the correct side to show my tattoos! It’s like it was made for me.

I was planning to do a typical beach shoot, with sand between my toes, long grasses in the background, maybe one of those slatted fences to lean languidly across. I figured if I just got to the lake there would have to be sand somewhere, but alas, I forgot that I am in Chicago and we literally import the sand for all the little beaches along the lake. Even though I had to reconceive the shoot on the fly, I’m still pretty pleased with how these turned out. I may not have sand, but look at that sunrise! I don’t think I’ve ever captured anything quite like it before.
